They are a particular option when the jaw is rather narrow for conventional <a href=\"https:\/\/karamousli.ch\/en\/dental-implants\/\">dental implants<\/a>. They are generally less suitable for single teeth that are subject to heavy chewing forces.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At our dental practice in K\u00fcsnacht, we offer all common types of implant, including mini implants for dentures. You will find an overview of all implant types, requirements and alternatives on our dental implants overview page.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are mini implants?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like a conventional implant, a mini implant is an artificial tooth root that is anchored in the jawbone and fuses with it. The difference lies in the diameter: mini implants are considerably narrower. They are usually made of titanium or a titanium alloy, a material with a proven track record over decades that is generally very well tolerated by the body.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mini implants for dentures are often one-piece. At the top, they carry a retaining element, for example a small ball attachment. The matching counterpart is built into the denture so that it clicks into place when inserted and can be taken out again for cleaning.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They should not be confused with the small mini-screws used in orthodontics. These serve only as temporary anchorage to move teeth in a targeted way and are removed again after treatment.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who are mini implants suitable for?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mini implants are mainly an option for people who already wear a full or partial denture, or need one, and would like a firmer hold. Typical situations include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a denture that slips when eating or speaking, often in the lower jaw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a narrow jaw ridge where conventional implants would require bone augmentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the wish for the smallest possible procedure, for example for health reasons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limits and alternatives<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they are narrower, mini implants bear less load than conventional implants. They are therefore usually not the first choice for a single crown in the back teeth or a fixed, screw-retained bridge. In cases of heavy teeth grinding or very soft bone, we also check carefully whether they offer sufficient stability.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on your situation, other solutions may be an option: conventional implants, with bone augmentation if necessary, an <a href=\"https:\/\/karamousli.ch\/en\/implant-bridge-the-permanent-replacement-for-your-teeth\/\">implant bridge as a fixed tooth replacement<\/a> or a conventional bridge on your own teeth. If you are anxious about the treatment, nitrous oxide sedation is available on request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attaching the denture:<\/strong> Whether the denture is attached to the implants straight away or only after a healing period depends on how stable the implants are in the bone. The retaining elements are built into your existing denture or a new one, made at our partner laboratory StarDent or another specialised laboratory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check-ups:<\/strong> We see you again after the procedure and then regularly to check the implants, gums and the fit of the denture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the procedure: healing and care<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first few days, slight swelling and a feeling of pressure are normal. Cooling, taking it easy physically and avoiding smoking and alcohol all support healing. We give you precise instructions after the procedure.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the long term, care is crucial. Plaque on the implants can cause inflammation of the surrounding tissue (peri-implantitis), which in the worst case leads to the loss of an implant. You should therefore clean your denture and implants thoroughly every day. The retaining elements in the denture wear over time and can be replaced when needed.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I keep wearing my existing denture?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, yes. If your denture fits well and is in good condition, the retaining elements can often be built into it. If it is old or no longer fits, a new denture makes more sense. We assess this during the examination.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does having mini implants placed hurt?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you usually feel nothing during it. Afterwards, you may experience slight discomfort for a few days.
